School Choice (as provided by No Child Left Behind)

All parents/guardians of students attending a school that has been identified in a step of improvement (i.e., Step 2, 3, or 4) have the right to request a transfer for their child(ren) to another school within the district or a neighboring district (referred to as a “choice school”) that has not been identified as a school in a step of improvement.

Unfortunately, we only have the one school in our district; all neighboring school districts have been contacted and either do not have any schools that are not in in a step of improvement or are accepting choice students. In fact, at the current time, there are very few schools in the state of Washington who are not identified in improvement. Therefore, there are no options to provide for transfer to a “choice school” at the present.

(Note: Since the 2007-2008 school year, no parents have taken the option to transfer with this provision even when other districts were accepting these students.)

In the state of Washington, all parents have the option of requesting that their child attend school in another district as outlined in RCW 28A.225.220-230.
